- This transparency enables all organizations that offer credentials—from colleges and universities with degrees, certificates and badges, to employers that offer professional development credentials, to licensing bodies, military training programs, career and technical institutions, bootcamps, high schools, and more—to clearly see the entire credential landscape and understand their place within it.

- open and free: open badges are developed with the help of free software and an open technical standard which can be used by anyone to create, issue and verify open digital badges;
- transferable: open badges can be collected from multiple sources, online and offline, into a single repository in order to display hard and soft skills and achievements on Learning Management Systems, social or professional networking platforms, digital portfolios, résumés, personal websites etc.;
- stackable: whether they are issued by one organization or many, open badges can build upon each other and be stacked to represent the full story of an individual’s skills and achievements;
- evidence-based: each open badge contains important metadata, which is hard-coded into the badge image file itself that links back to the issuer, criteria and verifying evidence.

The Possibilities of Badges and Blockchain - Connected Learning Alliance
tags: micro-credentials badges education association training
- The great thing about the Open Badges Infrastructure is that it’s a distributed, evidence-based system of credentialing. There are no gatekeepers; anyone can issue, earn, and display badges. Similarly, the blockchain is a distributed, open “ledger” to which anybody can add evidence and information in the form of cryptographic hashes. Long story short, pairing blockchain technology with Open Badges allows for trusted credentialing on a level usually reserved for international banking.
- blockchain plus badges equals rocket fuel for verified, trusted credentials. Everyone gets to point to a rock-solid “proof of learning” that they can use anywhere.

- An interesting feature of badges is how they can gain in value depending on the additional information they can contain. So, for instance, there may be badges you decide to self-issue (or “claim”) based on evidence you can provide that meets the criteria. There may be badges issued to you for specific knowledge, skills, or behaviours you have demonstrated. Then, there may be badges that are verified by reputable institutions. Finally, badges may be “endorsed” by third parties, giving them additional status and rigour.
